This term’s school trip took our learners to the Nairobi National Museum, starting with a wander through the Ranger Stories exhibition and a close-up look at a life-size rhino statue before the group gathered for a photo among the wildlife displays.

From there it was on to the museum’s main hall, where a full-grown elephant, a giraffe stretching toward the ceiling and a room full of animals they had only ever seen in books turned a social studies lesson into something they could walk around and point at.

Standing under a taxidermy elephant or reading a ranger’s own account of protecting rhinos gives learners a sense of scale and stakes that a textbook page cannot, and it is exactly the kind of hands-on, curiosity-led experience that sits at the heart of a genuinely holistic education. They came back with more questions than they left with — which, for a day like this, is the whole point.
